
What does the archwire do?
The archwire runs through the brackets and is the main element guiding tooth movement. Brackets tell the wire where it sits on each tooth, but the wire itself delivers much of the force and control.
What is a NiTi wire?
Nickel-titanium (NiTi) wires are valued for flexibility and memory. In early treatment, they can work effectively even when teeth are crowded or rotated because they can engage teeth without being very rigid.
What is a stainless-steel wire?
Stainless-steel wires are generally stiffer and are often used later, when the orthodontist wants more control for space closure, bite correction or finishing details. They are less springy than NiTi but very useful when alignment has progressed.
Why do orthodontists change wires?
Wire changes are usually purposeful rather than routine. The clinician may progress from a smaller, more flexible wire to a larger or stiffer one as the teeth straighten. The sequence helps match the force system to the treatment stage.
Will a new wire feel tighter?
Many adults feel pressure or soreness for a few days after a wire change. That is common, especially if the new wire engages teeth more fully or if extra components such as power chains are added at the same visit.
What if the wire starts poking?
Call the practice if a wire is causing ulceration, severe irritation or a true emergency. Orthodontic wax can sometimes protect the area temporarily. Do not try to pull or re-thread the wire yourself.
