
What does a bracket actually do?
A bracket is the attachment bonded to the front of the tooth. It acts as the interface between the tooth and the archwire. The wire runs through the bracket slot, and together they help guide tooth movement.
The main parts of a bracket
Patients usually see only a small square on the tooth, but a bracket often includes a slot for the wire, tie wings that hold elastic ligatures, and sometimes a hook for elastics. The exact shape varies by system and tooth.
Metal vs ceramic brackets
Metal brackets are strong, compact and common. Ceramic brackets are more tooth-colored or translucent, so they are less noticeable, but they can be bulkier. Adults often choose ceramic on the upper front teeth for esthetics.
Why do some brackets look different?
Not every tooth gets the same bracket shape. Some teeth may have hooks for rubber bands. Back teeth may use buccal tubes rather than regular brackets. Some systems are self-ligating, which means a clip-like mechanism holds the wire instead of a separate elastic tie.
What if a bracket comes loose?
A broken or detached bracket changes how the appliance works. The orthodontist may decide it needs prompt repair or can wait safely until the next appointment, depending on the tooth and the treatment stage. Do not try to glue it back yourself.

If you are comparing systems, ask whether the practice recommends metal or ceramic for your case, whether certain teeth need hooks or tubes, and how bracket choice affects visibility, strength and cost.
