Retainer Materials Explained

Retainers do not all work or wear the same way, partly because they are made from different materials.

The main retainer types

After braces, adults are commonly given a clear removable retainer, a Hawley retainer, a bonded retainer, or a combination. The choice depends on the case, bite, habits and clinician preference.

What is an Essix or clear retainer made of?

A clear retainer is a thin thermoformed plastic shell molded over a digital or physical model of the teeth. It is discreet and simple to wear, but like any plastic appliance it can crack, warp or wear over time.

What is a Hawley retainer made of?

A Hawley retainer usually has an acrylic base and a metal labial bow across the front. The acrylic sits against the palate or the tongue-side area, while wire components help the retainer engage the teeth.

What is a bonded retainer made of?

A bonded retainer is usually a thin metal wire fixed to the inner (lingual) surfaces of selected teeth with small composite pads. Because the wire is on the inside, it is less visible but needs careful cleaning around it.

Why do they feel so different?

Different materials create different advantages. Clear retainers are discreet. Hawley retainers are sturdy and adjustable. Bonded retainers are always there, but they only protect the teeth they are attached to and they do not replace professional reviews.

How does the material affect care?

Plastic retainers should be protected from heat and crushing. Hawley retainers need careful storage so the wire is not bent. Bonded retainers need diligent plaque control because the wire sits behind the teeth and can trap deposits.
