
What is a power chain?
The AAO glossary defines a power chain as interconnected elastic ligatures stretched across multiple teeth. They hold the archwire to bracket slots and can apply additional force.
Why do orthodontists use them?
A common use is helping close spaces or controlling groups of teeth. They are usually introduced only during certain stages, not necessarily for the entire course of treatment.
Will it feel tighter?
You may notice pressure or tenderness after a power chain is placed or changed. That is similar to other brace adjustments and should generally improve. Severe or persistent pain deserves a call to your orthodontist.
What if part of the chain breaks?
Call the practice for advice. A broken section may change the intended force. Do not try to knot, replace or stretch a household elastic over the brackets.
Cleaning around a power chain
Food and plaque can collect around any elastic ligature. Brush along the gumline and brackets and continue interdental cleaning as instructed. Strongly pigmented foods may discolor some elastic materials.
Power chains vs rubber bands
Power chains are attached to the brackets by the orthodontic team. Interarch elastics are typically removable rubber bands that the patient changes and wears in a prescribed configuration. They are not interchangeable.
